Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Tolmin. Hotel 3*.

If you come by train, you can take the local bus from Most na Soči. From the bus station it’s a short walk to the hotel. We highly recommend you arrive early afternoon so you can take the opportunity to visit the breathtaking Tolmin Gorges, the jewel of the Soča Valley. If history is your thing, then you can visit the tombs of German soldiers who fell nearby during the decisive Battle of Kobarid in 1917.

Day 2: Tolmin - Kobarid (medium difficulty, 16 km, 3.50 hrs, ascent 125 m / descent 75 m). Hotel 3*.

Now the real hiking begins! You will hike to the town of Kobarid beside the left bank of the Soča, the beautiful turquoise river that gives the valley not only its name but its beauty. The trail hugs the river, branching off occasionally through the woods at the foot of the mighty Krn massif. In the small church in Vrsno, you'll find a memorial of the famous Slovene poet Simon Gregorčič. When you arrive at Kobarid, there will be enough time to visit the famous museum of the First World War or to walk to the Italian ossuary above the city.

Day 3: Kobarid - Bovec (easy, 20.2 km, 6 hrs, ascent 412 m / descent 198 m). Hotel 3*.

Today you pass by Kozjak Waterfall. Cascading 15 metres down into a lovely emerald pool inside a stony chamber, this is probably the most beautiful of the many waterfalls in Soča Valley. As you trek along the Soča River near Žaga, head inland a bit to a lookout point under the mighty Boka Waterfall, the largest-volume waterfall in Slovenia. It’s a sight to behold. From here you cross the former WW1 frontline and head to the idyllic alpine town of Bovec.

Day 4: Bovec - Log pod Mangartom (medium, 11.3 km, 3.10 hrs, ascent 340 m / descent 151 m). Guesthouse 3*.

Today you head west away from Bovec and Soča. You’ll visit Kluže gorge, the impressive Austrian fortress which blocked the road into Austria. Part of the Juliana Trail also leads through the fort. The hiking trail continues upstream finally leading you to the picturesque village of Log pod Mangartom, your overnight stop.

Day 5: Log pod Mangartom - Tarvisio (hard, 20.6 km, 4:15 hrs, ascent 767 m / descent 659 m). Hotel 3*.

After a good night’s sleep amid the clean alpine air you’ll be ready for a slightly more demanding hike. The trail heads upwards towards the mountains and over the Predil pass. Your hard work will pay off as you will be greeted by perfect views of Mt. Mangart and Mt. Jerebica. Here you will cross into Italy and head to Lake Raibl. Raibl was once a lead ore mining town. Today though, you can relax and enjoy a nice cafe latte. From here you’ll follow the Rio Fredo River to Tarvisio, where you will spend the night.

Day 6: Tarvisio - Kranjska Gora (easy, 19 km, 6 hrs, ascent 181 m / descent 123 m). Hotel 4*.

After a hearty breakfast, the hiking tour continues back towards Slovenia along the route of the former railway. Leaving Italy, Four-Finger Mountain will be ever present in your view. Mighty Mt. Mangart will replace it as you cross back into Slovenia. The village of Rateče is famous for its good food, where you can refuel before visiting Zelenci, the source of the Sava River. You will stay overnight in Kranjska Gora, a world-famous ski resort and alpine town.

Day 7: Kranjska Gora - Mojstrana - Bled (medium, 16.6 km, 4.20 hrs, ascent 233 m / descent 403 m). Hotel 4*.

For the last day of your trip stunning views abound from start to finish. From a viewpoint called Srednji vrh, the Špik mountain range presents itself in all its glory! Once you can tear yourself away, you’ll head down into the valley following the cycling and hiking trail of the former Jesenice - Tarvisio railway all the way to Mojstrana. From here we will transfer you by car to the famous resort, Lake Bled, a beautiful glacial lake and alpine Slovenia’s most popular attraction.
(At the end of the hiking day, we will collect you in Mojstrana and transfer you to Bled. You are welcome to continue along the original Juliana Trail route to Bled. However, this goes through the industrial city of Jesenice and its suburbs and is less interesting. Please contact us if you would like to include this in your tour and we will add an extra day. (Please also see the Tab: Additional days.)

Day 8: Departure from Bled after breakfast.

Or - if you are hungry for more you can continue on our other tour, the southwestern stage of the Juliana Trail. Alternatively, stay in Bled for a few more days and soak up the magical delights of this alpine lake and its surroundings.
