Walking around Julian Alps

This Juliana Trail hiking tour is one of Slovenia’s most popular and spectacular. The track follows the south-eastern section of the Julian Alps through Triglav National Park. As you walk you will be in awe of the beautiful lush valleys and plateaus. You’ll hike over breathtaking mountain passes, through lesser known areas and small tourist attractions on the outskirts of the Alps. It’s a trail of water as you follow the Sava, Bača, and Tolminka rivers. Triglav, Slovenia’s highest mountain, will dominate your view for most of the hike. History buffs will enjoy the historic ironworks, and can visit the birthplaces of the great Slovenian writers and poets. Along the way you will meet interesting locals who live on secluded farms, meet alpine cheesemakers and learn about the importance of beekeeping in Slovenia.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Bled. Hotel 4*.

Alpine Slovenia’s premiere attraction, the fairytale Lake Bled, is characterized by its island church and clifftop castle all backed by the beautiful Karavanke Mountains. Make sure you are here for sunset to see this view in all its glory. For an aerial view, hike up to Mala Osojnica viewpoint at the western end.

Day 2: Bled - Goreljek (Pokljuka High Plateau) medium difficulty, 21 km, 7 hrs, ascent 866 m / descent 91 m). Hotel 3*.

Today you start hiking towards the Julian Alps. Leaving Bled, you head out through the surrounding little villages and into Pokljuka Gorge - a nature reserve and protected natural biotope. Your overnight stop will be in a true alpine village where you’ll breathe the fresh alpine air and get what could be the most peaceful night ever.

Day 3: Goreljek (Pokljuka High Plateau) - Stara Fužina Bohinj Valley (medium, 22 km, 5 hrs, ascent 280m / descent 1,005 m). Hotel 3*.

Today you will hike down into the stunning Bohinj valley. The trail heads through quaint villages and past many unique Slovene hay racks, known as Kozolec. Along the way you can visit an interesting little alpine museum. Soon you will be greeted by the most incredible view of Lake Bohinj, the jewel of the Triglav National Park. You will spend the night here, but before you get too comfortable be sure to take a hike along the lakeside or treat yourself to a panoramic cruise.

Day 4: Stara Fužina Bohinj Valley - Bohinjska Bistrica (easy, 11.3 km, 2.30 hrs, ascent 103 m / descent 151 m). Hotel 4*.

A leisurely hike awaits you today. With Lake Bohinj and the Julian Alps against your back, you will walk to the town of Bohinjska Bistrica. Here you can relax in the hotel’s thermal spa and enjoy its wellness program as you rejuvenate yourself ready for the more demanding sections ahead.

Day 5: Bohinjska Bistrica - Podbrdo (difficult, 13.7. km, 8 hrs, ascent 1,010 m / descent 1,208 m). Guesthouse 3*.

Now you begin the more challenging section of the Juliana Trail. Be assured though, that your efforts will not go unrewarded. First you ascend to Baška sedlo. Stop here for a snack and soak up the fabulous views; the best on the whole walk. The views extend into the near and far alpine mountains. Once you are able to drag yourself away, you will head down to Podbrdo and spend a peaceful night here.

Day 6: Podbrdo - Grahovo (hard, 17.1 km, 6.30 hrs, ascent 1,308 m / descent 879 m). Guesthouse 2*.

Lovers of peace and tranquillity will be head over heels with this section of the hike. It’s a part of Slovenia where, except for a few locals, visitors rarely stumble. You will meet some of these locals as you ascend high above the valley of the river Bača and enjoy these remote mountain trails.

Day 7: Grahovo - Tolmin (medium / easy, 21.9 km, 5.30 hrs, ascent 884 m / descent 1,013 m). Hotel 3*.

In the valley you will hike today, the first Slovenian talking picture was shot. It’s a story of partisans and their fierce battle against the occupiers. The trail passes many interesting monuments from the two world wars. By the afternoon you will reach the epic Soča River, the thundering body of water that snakes its way through the glorious valley of the same name. Before day’s end, you can take a boat ride along its famous turquoise lake.

Day 8: Departure from Tolmin,

Or... you could also stay in Tolmin a bit longer and visit some more of the amazing places in the Soča Valley. If you still have itchy feet then you could carry on hiking along our North-western loop of Juliana Trail or continue along the famous Alpe Adria Trail.
